New studio space

I was awarded a year-long studio residency with the Urban Culture Project, a local arts organization here in Kansas City. I moved into the studio last weekend, and found out that one of my studiomates is into metal as well. I think we’ll get along fine.

The space I’m in is at 125 E. 12th Street. On the third Friday of each month they have openings downtown, and the studios are open to the public. There won’t be any openings in August, but they will start up again in September. If you’re in the area, please stop by and say hello.

I started working on a world map where I can plot the origins of each metal band. I’ll color code the countries according the number of bands originating there.

The other thing I’m working on is the individual band cards. I’ve decided that instead of index cards, I’m going to make them a little larger, and I’m going to hand-draw each bands logo. This will make them more ‘art objects’ than reference cards. Also, they could be displayed on a wall as opposed to stacked in a box – which is what I was going to do with the index cards.

Also, I updated and cleaned up my website, www.thehistoryofmetal.com. I added more bands and also added some photos and links. Check it out.
