…and so it begins
Welcome to my blog. My name is Mike Hill, and I’m and artist/designer living in Kansas City. I am a formally trained painter, but over the last few years I’ve created large scale chart drawings. From 2003 – 2005, I created a series of drawings based on statistics culled from Red Sox baseball games. You can see them if you click on the “Baseball Project” link on the right side of this page. Viewing those drawings will help you get an idea of how I intend to approach my next drawing, “The History of Metal”.
“The History of Metal” (which shall be referred to as T.H.O.M. from here on out) will consist of a large, graphite/marker/ink on paper drawing detailing the origins, growth, and breadth of heavy metal music. I will attempt to separate out and identify different genres within metal, and place them on a timeline that will extend from the 1970’s to present day. In addition, I plan to have an interactive web-based version of the drawing created in flash. I anticipate that this project, in its entirety, will take at least a few years to complete.
Unlike the Baseball Project, the content of T.H.O.M. is more subjective. The information is tougher to come by, and there is no single authority to verify information with. I will require help from many different sources, the more the better. I plan on using this blog as a way to communicate with people on the progess of the drawing, as well as to solicit opinions and information on how I might categorize certain bands, or maybe find out about a band that I didn’t know existed.
Finally, I am working on a website dedicated to T.H.O.M., and I hope to have something up by then end of the week. The website will feature pictures and more information on the project as it becomes available.
Mike
